What to Pack for a Farm Stay (Season by Season)

A stay at Bachilton Farm Holidays offers a peaceful retreat into the heart of the Scottish countryside. But as with any rural getaway, knowing what to pack – especially as the seasons change – can make your trip far more comfortable and enjoyable. Here’s a handy seasonal guide to help you prepare.

🌸 Spring (March – May)

Spring at Bachilton is full of fresh air, new life, and blooming fields. It’s lambing season, so there’s plenty of cuteness around – but also, quite a bit of mud. Pack a good pair of waterproof boots or wellies for walking around the farm, and bring a waterproof jacket too, as spring showers are common. If you enjoy nature spotting, don’t forget binoculars and a camera – there’s always something to see.

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Scottish summers can be absolutely glorious, with long daylight hours and plenty of time to explore. That said, the weather can still be unpredictable, so a light waterproof jacket is always worth bringing. Comfortable walking shoes or trainers are perfect for strolling through fields and nearby trails. Pack breathable layers, sun cream, sunglasses, and perhaps a sunhat – yes, you might actually need one! A picnic blanket and a good book are lovely additions for a relaxing afternoon outdoors. If you plan on BBQing or dining alfresco, insect repellent can be useful too.

🍂 Autumn (September – November)

Autumn transforms the landscape into a palette of golds and reds – it’s truly one of the most beautiful times to visit. As temperatures dip and the evenings draw in, warm jumpers, scarves, and a good waterproof coat become essential. Walking boots or wellies are great for exploring the farm and surrounding countryside, especially with fallen leaves and damp ground underfoot. A torch or headlamp is also useful if you're arriving late or heading out after dark – rural nights can be very dark!

❄️ Winter (December – February)

A winter stay at Bachilton is all about crackling fires, crisp frosty mornings, and getting cosy. Bring thick jumpers, thermal layers, and a decent winter coat. Don’t forget warm socks, gloves, and a hat to keep you toasty on outdoor walks. Sturdy waterproof boots are essential, especially if you plan to venture beyond the beaten track. For indoor comfort, pack slippers and maybe even your favourite hot chocolate mix – our cottages are made for slow winter evenings.
